Bio
Joe is a telecommunications engineer that started his professional career working for DSC Communications. He spent four years testing long distance switches for MCI.
Joe then moved on to work at Ericsson. The prospects of travelling all over the country was very appealing. He quickly became proficient expanding MTSO capacity. Then grew into implementing all the telephony equipment for the cellular operators.
After four years of working on Ericsson equipment, Joe found an opportunity to join Hughes Network Systems. Joe spent 2 years working on implementing the Hughes switch where his first IP network was seen. Joe worked on and set up the networks using 10base2 thinnet. Back then they used VAX equipment to connect the ethernet segments.
Soon after completing a switch implementation in Florida, Joe wanted to return to Texas, so Joe rejoined Ericsson. He moved into technical support where he worked for 2 years providing technical support for the Ericsson Field engineers.
Joe decided to take a long term assignment in the Netherlands in 1998. This gave him the opportunity to work with GSM. GSM didn't arrive in the U.S. yet so this was a big leaning curve for him. During this time Joe started leaning IP networking.
The long term assignment was for 2 years, and after Returning to the U.S. Joe started working in a datacommunications position. Joe travelled to Argentina to show the local GSM operator a GPRS proof of concept.
Between travelling to Argentina and other countries, Joe studied for his Cisco CCNA certification and passed his exam on the first attempt.
Joe then moved back into Customer support again. Ericsson needed Joe's talents to integrate IP features into the mobile switching centers.
The mobile operators jumped on the new technology UMTS and Joe worked on migrating the operators networks from GSM to UMTS.
Then around 2009, LTE hit the market. Joe's IP networking skills were instrumental in transitioning from a UMTS network to an LTE network.
In 2012 Joe took a position in Ericsson's Advanced Technologies Lab. This was Joe's dream job. Joe got the privilege of working on some of the latest advances in telecommunications.
During this time Joe started working with virtualization. One of the amazing things he worked on was to create LTE nodes in minutes where as in the past it would take months.
Joe started work on obtaining his CCIE certification. He built his own CCIE lab to practice on. He also invited his colleagues to join in. His motto "If you can teach it, you know it". Shortly after starting his studies, he passed the CCIE written exam.
